Creativity involves being imaginative and original. Creativity is about problem solving. Creativity is often more about the process, rather than the actual product. The creative process is useful for many reasons, developing confidence in ourselves, developing good relationships, finding out what talents and strengths we have. The creative process helps us by teaching us about who we are, what we love and what we can give to others. Benefits Being involved in creative activities is fun and absorbing for children. Evidence suggests that it helps children to have positive experiences and develop important characteristics and abilities such as: • Concentration – Focusing on what they are doing. • Communication - Developing better communication through talking, listening, writing or pictures. • Language - Increasing vocabulary, reading and writing skills. • Independence of thought - Discovering things for themselves. • Problem-solving – Being able to explore different solutions. • Physical Activity - Participating in activities that encourage movement. Different types of creative activity • Solitary – An activity where a child works alone, perhaps when a child makes a model. Modelling helps children gain confidence and helps with fine motor skills. • Shared - is anything that two or more are taking part in, so you may see two children sharing an activity. In my setting the children like playing with the bricks and building which is being creative in their design and helping or role modelling for one another. The difference being that you can see they are interacting, communicating and playing in 'their' way which shows they are sharing the experience. • Group - can be something such as making a large art piece. The group activity usually (because of the numbers) may need adult direction depending on what the activity is and the age and stage of the
