Gary Chan Some Discrimination Problems of Foreigners in Korea As we know, where there is foreigner, there is discrimination, so as Korea. More and more foreigners coming to Korea to study or work raises the problem that foreigners have a difficulty getting identification online when they want to register on a website or do some shopping online. Because most foreigners who work or study in Korea want to acquire the same right as Korean citizens, but online identification problem adds a lot of troubles in their lives. This is an act of discrimination against foreigners. For example, I have had to use a Korean friend's ID number to buy whey powder online because I couldn't find it in any store here and my own alien registration card number was not recognized or accepted. Another example is that one of my friends has to register on a Korean internet forum for their homework, after filling in everything else correctly he was stuck on the registration, even though he filled alien registration card number issued by Korean government correctly. Then he asked his professor for help, and knew that foreigners could not sign up for most of Korean websites because the alien registration card number could not be recognized or accepted by system. To be more specific, for almost everything you do in Korea from setting up a cell phone, establishing credit card account or signing up for a Korean website you need a number. Korean citizens have an ID cards and foreigners have Alien Registration Cards that prove you are legally allowed to work and live in the Korea. Both systems assign the numbers for life. Unfortunately, there are certain limitations you'll encounter with an Alien card and despite the fact that it's supposed to be the Foreigners' version of a Korean ID card, certain government initiated restrictions are imposed upon the Alien card.
