Receiving a vaccine trains your body to fight off a disease. Similarly, training America’s youth to handle difficult situations can prevent future problematic situations. The second part of Benjamin Franklin’s quote says, “Wise and good men are in my opinion, the strength of the state; more so than riches or arms.” This quote references the quality of men that are in a country, and how a single man can make a greater difference than any amount of riches or arms. Riches and arms are only temporary things, but a good man has a more lasting impact. One of the greatest examples of a “good man” is Martin Luther King Jr. which is a name recognized throughout the world.

Through the essay, he describes his suffering of his obsessive-compulsive disease that makes him an outcast from elementary into college. Moreover, he not only allows the audiences to take a look at his personal life but also leads the readers to relate his struggles. By struggling with his tics, Sedaris discovers a way to control his outlandish behaviors that make him normal in society’s eyes.

He put his life on the line for the people but not just for the people some for his own selfish reasons as described above. C.J. Pascoe’s Dude You’re a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School gives great insight into modern youth in the high school setting and how relationships between gender and sexuality may be embedded in major learning institutions. The book focuses on the male population in the high school setting and how males constantly display signs of their idea of masculinity and attacking those who do not obtain such masculinity by labeling them as a “fag”. Pascoe explains that perpetuating the ideas of masculinity in high school and other institutions leads to the formation of a defined line between what is perceived as normal masculine behavior and what is not. Pascoe’s book explicitly reveals societies obsession with masculine identity and the fear of “faggoty” behavior.
Men: Afflicted; Obsessed; Silently suffering. Society has always objectified women but as we move forward into a culture of masculinity, we see that men are plagued too. The obsessions can lead to extreme measures as seen in Ted Spiker’s article, “How Men Really Feel about Their Bodies,” where he argues that men in today’s society have grown equally concerned about their bodies and share common ideals are but are driven by different forces. Spiker goes beyond social silence and voices the “8 Fundamental Truths” that men need society to know about. Confidence, good looks, and health are motivational forces that feed the hunger for a better body (555).
