Hypothesis testing is used in both science and business to test assumptions and theories and ultimately guide manager when facing decisions. Sometimes scientific progress consists of identifying the conditions under which a theory holds or fails. The theory’s testable implications are hypotheses. Received knowledge is the collection of hypotheses that have not been rejected even though rigorous efforts have been made to do so. Hypothesis testing often begins with a hunch and leads to an iterative loop of testing which continues until the theory is either rejected or satisfactorily reformulated (Doane & Seward, 2007).
Cigarette Smoking Among Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals:
How Serious a Problem? (United States).
This article reveals evidence that the smoking rate among bisexuals, gays, and lesbians is higher than the smoking rate of heterosexuals. The sample was taken by phone surveys and the numbers were generated randomly by a computer. The method of sampling was stratified sampling in that the strata were counties in the area being sampled from. The amount of participants in each stratum was taken from county population estimations. A possible flaw with this study is that respondents are asked to identify themselves as being homosexual. Because some homosexuals are unwilling to tell the truth in regards to their sexual orientation, the results have the possibility of being biased.
The means of the analysis was logistic regression. This research uses characteristics such as gender, race, income, and level of education as control variables.
