One of the most common psychiatric disorders among children is Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Trebatická,J., et al., 2010). In an open study it has been shown that Pycnogenol®, an extract from the French maritime pine tree bark, has been effective in alleviating the symptoms of ADHD. In the article “Treatment of ADHD with French maritime pine bark extract, Pycnogenol®” the hypothesis was that the effect of Pycnogenol® would alleviate ADHD symptoms in children.
To complete the study of Pycnogenol® on ADHD symptoms the article states (Trebatická,J., et. al.,2010) “researchers gave 61 children   one mg/kg/day Pycnogenol® or a placebo over a four week period in a randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind study” (p. 329). The researchers gave each of the 61 children an exam at the start and end of the four week period. Symptoms of children with ADHD include developmentally inappropriate over-activity, inattention, academic underachievement, and impulsive behavior. The positive effect of Pycnogenol® on ADHD was shown to reduce the hyperactivity, improve attention span, visual-motoric coordination, and concentration in the children given the Pycnogenol®, thus proving the hypothesis to be accurate.   No positive effects were seen in the children who took the placebo.
The discoveries of the study of Pycnogenol® on children with ADHD seems to present parents with an alternative treatment to existing drugs, especially for those parents who have concerns about the adverse effects of established drugs. In the studies teachers could notice a decrease in the hyperactivity levels, and an increase in the attention span. For parents the increase in the attention span was not as obvious in comparison to the teachers’ observation. The study did not show a significant improvement in girls as it did in the boys.
