During one of our classes we came into a discussion that involved how rap music had a strong link to poetry even though it’s not easy for most to see. I being an avid listener of rap music at that moment realized something I had never even thought about. Rap is really just another form of poetry just as spoken word is a form of poetry. Though many of us don’t realize this because rap has a negative stigma that it carries with it. Rap is associated with the degradation of women, gang related activities, etc. However that is just the surface, much like poetry, rap is a way to share your feelings, thoughts, and ideas out to those who are willing to listen to your form of art; that is why I specifically chose the song Hurt me Soul by rapper Lupe Fiasco to further express how rap and poetry are similar as well as to share what this song means to me. The definitions of poetry according to Merriam- Webster is defined as “writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm.” Now the definition of rap is “a rhythmic chanting often in unison of usually rhymed couplets to a musical accompaniment.” This is the definition that Merriam- Webster provides for rap is a broad definition that truly doesn’t reveal how rap is a form of self- expression. All it really does is give a basic definitions of rap which doesn’t really help to relieve the negative stereotypes that are all too familiar to those even remotely associated with rap. That’s why I chose the song Hurt Me Soul because it’s a look at the negative connotations of rap through the eyes of a rapper. The rap song Hurt Me Soul by Lupe Fiasco is considered by many to be an extremely insightful songs which allows the listener to truly identify how the artist Lupe Fiasco feels about mainstream rap
