Human Service Organization Leadership Philosophy

John W. BSW, MSW, MBA Student My leadership philosophy is composed of several different areas but all from a central theme of the following the Golden Rule. This, in its simplest form is to treat others as you would want to be treated. It may sound corny and religious but all civilizations and all religions have used it in one form or another. 1. I believe that leadership should be based on a vision that must be adjusted as needed for the organizational climate and constituents they serve. My vision for human service organizations (HSO’s) is to comprehensively provide quality services for the people that they serve through an attainment of all appropriate funding, adhering to all stakeholders, maintaining a balanced and knowledgeable staff, and making informed decisions based on care and compassion. This is all done with the end game of changing and saving lives in the areas that the organization focuses on. This vision should be adjusted as needed from a 360 degree approach of assessment that combines both top down and bottom up methods in an effort to take all parties into consideration and assess the true climate of the HSO. 2. I believe that true leadership stems from seven core values that all leaders must possess. The seven core values that I feel every leader must use to develop and maintain their vision from are: Integrity, Informed Ability, Conceptualization, Loyalty, Compassionate Acceptance, Respect, and Personal Courage. With these core values subordinates will not only be loyal, they will thrive and seek to follow the leader as opposed to needing coercion. People need and seek out leadership and not the other way around. I believe Teddy Roosevelt said it best that, “some men have greatness thrust upon them” and those are the true leaders because they have been called to lead by those who would follow them. 3.
