Human Resources Management Roles Katelynn Cobb HCS 341 September 16, 2013 Gregory Kennedy Human Resources Management Roles Human Resources Management (HRM) is considered to be a “major component of any manager’s job” (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2010, p. 2). Human resources have to take on different roles and functions in order to maintain peace and tranquility in the company as well as stay ahead of the competition. The personnel also have to make sure that the employees are accomplishing the company’s mission (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2010, p. 2). Human resources managers are considered to be staff employees because they are those that provide support services for the line employees (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2010, p. 3). Some roles and functions that human resource managers have that will be discussed are staffing, performance management, development and learning, valuing people, and organizational effectiveness. Roles One of the roles that human resources management has to undergo is staffing. Human resources have to find and secure the right employees for the positions available. They are also responsible for promoting, empowering immediate supervisors to make the hiring decisions, making sure the potential employee is a good fit versus being the most knowledgeable, and hiring new workers informally or formally (Gomez-Mejia, Balkin, & Cardy, 2010, p. 26). Human resources should also make a profile of each position to enunciate the essential abilities and proficiencies required (Kabene, Orchard, Howard, Soriano, & Leduc, 2006). Another role is performance management. Performance management is being able to hold the employees accountable and reward those that deserved it. With performance management it gives human resources management the ability to provide feedback as well as coaching to the employees in a timely
