Case 1.2: HR in Small Business 1. Would you like to Work for a company such as Zappos? What do you see as the main advantages and disadvantages of doing so? Explain. I would definitely like to work for Zappos. From what I know about the company, it seems as though there is a close-knit family atmosphere; even the CEO has a complete “open door policy,” considering his work station is not only door-less, but indistinguishable from any other of the hundreds of employees’ stations. Some advantages would include working in a friendly and fun-loving environment, centered on working hard and playing hard. The company shies away from serious titles and uses parties and parades to open up trust and communication between employees. Overall, the most positive aspect about working for Zappos is the culture – everyone is moving in the same direction and working toward the same goal together. The only disadvantages of working at Zappos that seem apparent are that salaries are often below market rates with the average hourly worker making just over $23,000 per year. Moreover, even though the company covers one hundred percent of health care costs, employees are not offered perks found at other companies, such as on-site child care, tuition reimbursement, and a 401(k) match. Despite the disadvantages, I would much rather enjoy what I do than be making double, but dread going to work in the morning. I would have to say that plenty of others like me would hope to work at a place like Zappos as it has appeared on Fortune Magazine’s list of “Best Companies to Work For.” 2. What personal qualities do you think are necessary for an employee to be successful at a company such as Zappos? How would you select for those qualities? Explain.
