Assignment 1: human impact on the environment. Introduction: In M1 I will be carrying out an assessment relationship between damages to the environment and human health. I will also be researching areas in Sheffield and talking about how for example pollution is different in different areas of Sheffield. The science: environmental health and hazards. it has been proven by scientists that all organisms depend on their environment for energy and the materials needed to sustain life: clean air, potable water, nutritious food and safe places to live. For most of human history the increase in longevity were due to improved access to these necessities. Over the years the advances in agriculture, sanitation, water treatment, and hygiene have had a far greater impact on human health than medical technology. There has been a study done in Sheffield on pollution in the areas because pollution levels vary enormously in different parts of the city, the reason for this is partly because of the placing of location of industry’s in the north and east compare to the usual south and south-west winds and partly because the city varies in altitude from less than 200 t0 over 1,000 feet above sea level. Information’s on pollution levels and other environmental issues are easily available, since both the University Geography department and the local Health Authority runs a large number of selection posts. So it was easy to select the areas with quite distinctive pollution levels. The used school children’s in this study, they were able to use pollution readings that were appropriate to the exact areas in which the children lived. The children the selected for the study included the whole first year infant intake of eight local authority schools in four contrasting areas.
