HUMAN BEINGS ARE ESSENTIALLY GOOD AND BAD The essay will examine the meaning of the word morality, whether we are both of it, the several stages associated with morality and confirmation that humans in general are both good and bad with reference to religion, cultural background, educational values and outlook and perspective of life. “So far, about morals, I know only that what is moral is what you feel good after and what is immoral is what you feel bad after.” ― Ernest Hemingway, Death in the Afternoon Keywords: Morality, morality issues, morality systems, stages of morality Good and Bad Introduction: There are many views and opinions around the subject ‘Morality’ and would one automatically assume this applies only to people who display a sense of goodness, good will and humility? There are some startling facts referring to others being completely biased towards this phenomenon. The starting point of this essay will look at the general definition of Morality as described as a system of rules of what is right or wrong and how humans should behave accordingly (Campbell, 2012; Engeli, et al. 2010; Frued, 1962; Ward, 2012). First research question : What is the meaning of morality? There is no universal system of morality as the meaning differs from one area, group and time. To some it means a guidance of a person’s conduct by reason, religion or upbringing. The philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead suggests: ‘Morality is what the majority then and there happens to like and immorality is what they dislike’. With reference to human beings being good, does this confirms why people behave in a certain way like they do? Engeli et al.
