Alice Jajua Professor Bernadette McBride Comp 110 #2 7/30/12 How We View Movie in Today Society Jonathan Silverman and Dean Rader, in their article “Introduction to the Movies” point out the power of movies as a cultural tool. They organize their article by breaking it down into various components such as “Movies are a Powerful Cultural Tool. Movies, Movies are not just about ideas and action, they are also about values, Like Literature and Music, Movies are Comprised of Genres, Movies use Various techniques to manipulate Audiences”. In the article “Great Movies and Being a Great Movie-goer”, Roger Ebert makes the claim that “we are born with our minds open to wonderful experiences, and only slowly learn to limit ourselves to narrow tastes. We are taught to lose our curiosity by the bludgeon-blows of mass marketing, which brainwash us to see “hits,” and discourage exploration” (326). Because he is a film critic, who likes to sit in the dark theater and enjoy movies and also write about them, he is also telling us not to limit ourselves to “hits” and encourage us to watch movies from other countries like the one he mentions from Iran about Children of Heaven which is a subtitled film. Ebert also says “to limit yourself to popular hits and recent years is like being Ferris Bueller but staying home all day” (326). Though Ebert makes some good points in his article by showing the impact of film on culture, Silverman and Rader offer the reader more in breaking down the different components of the film industry; therefore are more helpful in showing readers that film has a significant impact on culture.
