In the past, television was a way to bring the family together for enjoyment and to educate children. In recent years, television (and other media) has been abused by its makers and those who watch it as well. Our 21st century youth are spending too much time watching TV and surfing the internet. Not only are they wasting their lives away on both, but the content they are watching and hearing are affecting them in many negative ways. Television is viewed by hundreds of millions of people all over the world. A large majority of people believe that TV is a great tool for education and entertainment. Local to world news and political channels keep us all well informed on what is happening around us. Cooking shows improve viewer’s skills in the kitchen and help them to eat healthier. And of course, the main purpose of TV, the entertainment that is enjoyed from almost any channel, lifting people’s moods and bringing families together to spend quality time with one another. However, there are many counters to these pros of watching TV. Excessive TV watching and sometimes even a little of it is harmful for anyone, but children and youth, in general, are highly affected by TV in many negative ways. Extension Family and Child Development Specialist, Dr. Ellen Abell said, “studies show that long periods of television may hamper development of the pre-frontal cortex- the area of the brain responsible for planning, organizing and sequencing behavior of self-control, moral judgment, and attention.” Throughout the U.S., there are reports of failing academic ability, reading and listening inability, comprehension and attention problems, and more, all associated with the growing time spent in front of the television.
