English Coursework – Christine Chong Raising a teenager in five easy steps Exam stress This is a problem that many teenagers stress over. Imagine you’re in an exam and you get through half of the paper, no problem but then you get to a question that you don’t understand. Fair enough you can’t know everything; however you realize that you don’t have a lot of time left. You start to panic. Then your mind drifts over to other things. If you fail this exam then that means you’d failed school altogether and ruined any chances of going to college. Then you’ll be stuck living with your parents forever. Fear not parents! For there is a simple way to help your teenager cope with exam stress. Firstly just talk to them calmly. Find out what they’re learning. Try and get them to go to workshops with a friend to revise. If you feel the need to, have a chat with their teacher to see what your son/daughter needs to improve on. Gentle encouragement is the key, not incessant nagging. Following these simple steps will help your teenager to not stress so much and might end up improving their grades! Coping with puberty It’s that time in your teenagers life when they start to change in ways you once did as a teenager. Mood swings. Hormones. All these are a part of puberty. There is nothing to fear, because you experienced it yourself. If you have noticed that your son/daughter is screaming one minute and then crying at the next. Whatever you do, don’t scold him/her. This will only lead to more extreme mood swings and further conflict. Instead of scolding them, you could take them for a nice day out. This might help them to calm down. Body image Being self-conscious of your body is a perfectly normal thing. Everyone knows the feeling.
