Learning to make your own sushi can be fun and rewarding. As all of us know, sushi could be really expensive, especially when you go to a real Japanese restaurant. The freshness of the ingredients makes it a very popular and easy to prepare dish; so once you know how to prepare those small rolls of vinegar-flavored cold cooked rice with garnish of vegetables, or raw fish, you will be the center of attention among friends and relatives, certainly a rewarding experience when you see them enjoying that delicious sushi you were able to prepare for them. Let’s talk about some of the ingredients and materials that we will need. A sushi mat would help; a rice cooker is an absolute necessity. Now, we shall get some vegetables like avocado, yellow bell pepper, red bell pepper, nasu; (an eggplant), negi (a Japanese onion), cucumber, and umeboshi ;( a small, bitter, pickled Japanese plum). Also we are going to use fish like salmon, tuna, or eel. Spices and seeds also play a part in sushi, pickled ginger and wasabi are very important. Now we know the basics of the ingredients and materials to prepare this delicious treat Now one of the things that we have to do now is to prepare sushi rice. Many people have trouble understanding the process; with that being said, Sushi rice is not regular rice that is straight out of the rice cooker. We must use proper portion so that way it will stick; which means that for sushi rice, less water is used than ordinary rice. Measure about 25 percent more water than the rice measurement, and add some vinegar. Let the rice soak for about ten minutes.
