The origin of French toast is obscure; the United Kingdom, they call French toast, “Eggy bread.” The United Kingdom and the United States, French toast can be served at any time of the year. It is usually served as a breakfast meal, to go alongside your choice of beverage. In Portugal and Brazil people usually serve French toast around Christmas time; in Spain it is served around Easter. We do know that the origin of French toast goes back as far as the Ancient Roman times, where they called it "Pain a la Romaine," or Roman bread. Thus, French toast is worldly a wonderful treat. Most people believe that the poor people in France and Italy made French toast because they needed to utilize the stale bread they had and make it taste better. The poor used wheat bread because, being less processed it cost less to make than the white bread, which the rich used. White bread was preferable for making French toast because it soaked up the egg-milk mixture much better than wheat bread. The rich people ate French toast as a delicacy, as where the poor relied on it for food. French toast can be made many different ways. The most basic way and the beginning of most recipes is a mixture of eggs and milk. There are many different spices and flavorings that can be added to the egg-milk mixture, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract. Some people even use brandy. That tradition probably comes from the Romans! The bread is soaked in the mixture until it is soft, then it is grilled in a pan, in ancient times, the soaked bread was roasted above the fire.
