How to Avoid Risky Behavior in Teenagers Would you or your parents be okay if you killed yourself or someone else? Most teens are starting to drive and enter high school, and with that comes risks. When you hear about a suicide or homicide that’s happened, you can conclude that 90% of the time it’s a teenager that’s done it. This is because parents aren’t being as strict with their children as they used to, therefore teens are thinking that they can go out and do what they what without actually thinking about the consequences. Teenagers tend to overestimate the consequences of the risks of drug use, the act of violence and sexual activity. According to the Office on Smoking and Health, cigarettes and alcohol are the most popular drugs among teenagers and they also cause more deaths than all other drugs combined. Almost half of all teenagers take part in binge drinking, which causes alcohol-related accidents. Do you want to have lung cancer or heart disease for the rest of your life from a decision you made as a teenager? Many teenagers think that because their parent(s) started smoking at a young age, they can do the same and just because their parent(s) don’t have lung cancer or heart disease, he/she isn’t going to get it either. If you or your parent(s) want you to stop abusing drugs and alcohol, would you go to a prevention program? For abusing drugs, there is D.A.R.E.(Drug Abuse Resistance Education), which is a program for you to learn about how to say “no” to peer pressure and what happens to you and your body when you do abuse drugs. Suicide and homicide is the third leading cause of death in teens, and the abuse of drugs and alcohol are a big contribution to teen suicide whether you realize it or not.
