Many people believe that the Internet and its derivatives: email, chat rooms and web-surfing are some of the most innovative technological developments of the last one hundred years. However, not all of the people feel this way. According to David Gelernter, a professor of computer science at Yale University, computers and the Internet are not a revolutionary development in human history. David Gelernter states, that computers and Internet are the result of the greatest developments, which have not made a big impact on peoples' lives. I do not agree with his statement. In this essay, I would like to prove that computer, the Internet and its derivatives, such as email and web-surfing, are some of the most innovative technological developments in the past hundred years. First of all, the computer and the Internet have changed the way people live and do things. In particular, computers and the Internet provide people with worldwide information 24/7. The Internet has enabled people to instantly share information with each other. The days are gone when people had to wait for weeks to receive letters and photos from their families and friends. In the article, “Computers and the Pursuit of Happiness”, David Gelernter stated that society had shared information for many years before computers and the Internet appeared and did it successfully. Therefore, he believes that computers and the Internet did not bring us to an information age; it only changed the way information was delivered. However, most of the people would not agree with Gelenter because this change in delivery of the information is a big advantage for the society. In fact, computer and the Internet have enabled people to save time on the delivery of information.
