Research is the process of systematic inquiry that is designed to collect, analyze, interpret and use data to understand, describe, predict or control a psychological phenomenon or empower individuals (Walker, 1987). Research design is the researcher’s plan of how to proceed to gain an understanding of a group or phenomenon (Ary, et al. 2002). Before any proposal is drawn considerations about how the proposal will look like, what approaches it will take and the kind of methodologies which will be used in the proposal, all lie at the heart of the research design. Three factors which influence the choice of one’s approach over another during research design are; the research problem, the audience and the researcher’s personal experiences (Creswell, 1994). This paper will discuss the way these three factors influence the choice of one’s approach over another during research designing with the aid of relevant cases, philosophies of knowledge and claims and strategies of inquiry. educational research has two broad categories of approaches, which are: quantitative and qualitative approach. Creswell (1994), however observed that another very important approach which has been used in recent years is the mixed method approach which mixes different methods that involve collecting and analyzing both forms of data of quantitative and qualitative in a single study. According to Ary et al, (2002), qualitative research focuses on understanding social phenomena from the perspective of the human participants in the study, while quantitative research uses objective measurement and statistical analysis of numeric data to understand and explain phenomena. The strategies of inquiry associated with quantitative research include: true experiments and the less experiments called quasi-experiments and correlation studies which involves surveys which uses questionnaires or structured
