The Historic roots of the Criminal justice system have affected criminal investigations in many ways. The skills, tools, and knowledge of early investigators have been in use for a number of years and have influenced many modern advances in investigation. Several investigative techniques that were developed early on are still in use today. The investigators of old developed the art of investigation to find whatever answers they searched for. This art includes skills acquired and passed down over many years. These skills were learned through experience, intense study, and diligent observation. The skills were developed because of a need to respect and protect the rights of the accused based on the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These rights guarantee the accused the right to be protected from unreasonable searches and seizures, the right to remain silent and to not be forced to incriminate oneself, as well as, the right to trial by jury of the accused individual's peers. These skills are still in use today, although in many different ways. Modern technology has expedited the learning process with the many criminal justice schools. Observation have also come a long way because of the tools we now use. Simple Line ups have evolved with the use of databases of mug shots, fingerprints, and DNA records. These databases allow the sharing of information between agencies across the world that otherwise wouldn't be possible with typical paperwork. The knowledge learned over years of investigations was acquired through hard work and diligence. This knowledge was passed from one investigator to the next. Over many years, the information was passed to new investigators via word of mouth and study of previous investigator's paperwork.
