Popular Torture Viewer discretion is advised. In Anne-Marie Cusacs article “Watching Torture in Prime Time” she discloses the truth behind Fox Channel’s hit show “24” and it’s use of torture as method of entertainment. The media has become a huge part of our lives for a source of learning, entertainment and communication. Popular media needs to be limited to the context, since much of the information it is unreliable. Exposing violence in the media teaches bad morals and is not supported by the greater good of society.
Although, she does admit even she was shocked when listening to the speech, as she explains “the line was not believable”. From this I can conclude that source one doesn’t wholly hold Churchill responsible for the 1945 election defeat, however the reliability of the source is questionable as it is bias towards the conservative party. Source two, an extract from Lord Butler’s memoirs, clearly shows opposition to not only Churchill but also the conservative party, Lord Butler for example describes Churchill’s speech as a “negative attack on the labour party” and believed that he should have instead focused on “post-war policies”. By describing Churchill’s use of the word “Gestapo” as a “strategic blunder” shows that Butler is blaming Churchill in having played a role in the defeat of the 1945 election. Although both members of the conservative party, Butler and Churchill were political enemies, this is evident when looking at the extract: “a poor third place to the concentrated exploitation of Churchill’s personality” – this is a personal attack on Churchill’s actions.
Senator Paine has made an argument that is both extremely immoral and also very smart. He says that in order to run your district well you have to “play ball” and do some dirty work to accomplish your goals. In the movie Paine makes deals with someone in order to get particular votes in his favor. As a member of the senate, Paine is trying to please his people by giving them what they want, and if you must do some immoral tasks to do this then so be it. As Machiavelli said, “The ends justify the means.” As long Senator Paine is doing these things for the good of the state rather than the good of himself, it is necessary to make these compromises of one’s principles.
Americans know “racial profiling is both morally wrong and ineffective”, but they rather be safe than sorry (Chavez 563). Americans only get the idea that all middle easterners are terrorists because media has taken the role of portraying them in such a way to plants terror in Americans (Spurlock). People have gotten to the point of people being “singled out” because of looking certain way or because people around them feel uncomfortable (Chavez 569).
The Black Robe movie insinuate that all the Indians were evil and that is what justified their extermination, which is why Ward Churchill a troversialist criticized the movie because he claimed to be part Indian and said that the movie was "a deliberate exercise in vilification". Most people know that is not true that not all Indians are evil, but putting that false information may change people's mind because it is a historical movie. I think people should make the movie with only the facts that they know are true and correct to make the movie. In the Crucible the director of the movie stated that John was the one that said the prayer wrong, but in fact it was Elizabeth and that for me should have changed the outcome of the story. Like my last statement, it would harm people's knowledge on history, even though it doesn't look like it has great importance it is the small details that always count.
The answer is, yes. Political polling, like abortion and gun control, is a hot-button issue in the United States. Many people believe that political polls incorrectly portray the public’s opinion on a certain topic, which may also have a detrimental effect on a candidate running for office. As Statesman Benjamin Disraeli famously said, “if you torture data long enough, they’ll admit to anything” (Source B). Therefore, political polls, without a doubt, do not accurately represent the correct views of a population.
This caused much controversy as Americans would classify him as a traitor or hero for what he did. Americans called him a hero because they feel like they should have some type of privacy and security when it comes to their private documents and what they do over the internet as well as in their free time. Other Americans feel like he is a traitor because he revealed documents that were classified and did not have permission from the National Security Agency to leak them to the public. I classify Edward Snowden as a hero. The National Security Agency (abbreviated NSA) is the creator and manager of the signals intelligence agency of the United States of America who’s responsibility it is to check and analyze all foreign communications.
This is also seen today as our own governments try to control us by political propaganda and fabricated news, which is also seen in the novel. They censor what we see, what we believe, our past and our future. They misinform the public by manipulating and tweaking the truth to support their own personal agenda. Just as the Party lied about how the war against Eastasia and Eurasia was going, our media lies about similar subject
English 122 19 October 2010 Censorship in American Films The censorship of films; is it right or wrong? This is a topic that is debated strongly by both sides. In my view the censorship of films is wrong and it violates the First Amendments right to freedom of speech. Films are a form of art and therefore should be shown as the film maker intended, without any cutting or editing. The word censorship comes from the word censor.
TV’s Effect: Helpful or Harmful? Media is often deemed the scapegoat for all of humanity’s problems; whether it’s obesity, a paucity of morals, people having fallow minds, and most of all, violence. Violence is defined as a behavior using physical force that is meant to hurt, injure, or kill someone or something. Over the years there have been numerous studies about how television can effect a person’s personality and levels of aggression. The studies set out to demonstrate how “awful” violence on television is to the human mind, yet there are some who assert that some of the shows with violence have good morals behind them.
