Water consumption varies from country to country, this is mainly because of the water availability, the technology available to them and a countries economic status. USA has the highest water consumption out of the 5 countries shown in figure 2. This may be because they have a large population and the demand is very high but the domestic use is considerably low compared to the water use in the other sectors (200 cubic meters pp). Most of the water use is by the industrial sector(800 cubic meters pp) because they are an industrialised country and most of their income is from manufacturing products. The only reason why the USA is able to sustain their use is because they have reliable water sources and manage the supplies well. Ghana has the least use of water. Although Ghana lies on the tropics and have rainfall seasons giving them absolutely no physical water stress, they have financial insecurity so are unable to extract and use the water supply. It is also an LEDC so there is a lack of hygiene which means that there are risks of water Bourne diseases making it dangerous for consumption thus the reason why domestic use is low ( less than 100 cubic meters pp). Ghana may also lack the infrastructure i.e pipelines for transporting water making it hard for investments needed to become industrialised therefore the reason why it's low ( less than 100 cubic meters pp) Egypt although being part of the Sahel region uses a significant amount of water. Mainly for the agricultural sector (800 cubic meters pp). Egypt is under physical water stress and is arid so lack water. Most of the water is used for irrigation of crops that are impossible to grow in the natural conditions available.
