How does Stoker use the setting to help describe Jonathan Harker? The setting described in this book does help to tell the reader about the character, Jonathan Harker. First of all the extract describes of how, when arriving at the Hotel Royale in Klausenburgh, Harker tries some local food. The food he tries is ‘paprika hendl’ and the waiter goes on to tell him that this national dish would be available ‘anywhere in the Carpathians’. This give the reader an insight into harker, telling the reader that he is open minded and not scared to try new things. The fact that Harker is traveling alone, through Europe, tells the reader that he is adventurous. Not many people of that time would be brave enough to go into the unknown like he has. Harker goes on to explain how his ‘smattering of German’ has been of use to him. This gives the reader an insight to the intellectual side of Harker and give the reader the feeling that he could be from a middle or higher class background as not many people of that time knew and other languages. Harker seems to rely on his maps. He studied maps of transylvania, in his spare time, which shows he is committed to the task at hand, but also shows that he likes to be wary of his surroundings. It also describes how Harker has heard about some superstitions about the area and ‘must ask the Count’ showing him being inquisitive and, that he could have a slight worry about where he will be staying. Stoker uses various settings, which can be related to the plot. In this extract, Harker describes how he has traveled through so many different places. This relates to the plot as throughout the book the destination of the characters is constantly changing, from Transylvania to Amsterdam and from London to Whitby.
