Many researcher have put forth numerous studies to correlate personality, professional career and job performance. In this essay the most outstanding school of thought which is popularly referred to as The Big Five study supported by Paul Costa and Robert McRae has been explained in a detailed way so that one can very clearly conclude the impact of personality on employee performance. Another important stream known as RIASEC portrayed by John L. Holland has been included to critically evaluate the Big Five theory and explain the multifaceted personality term and the way in which personality traits translate into individual’s professional careers. The essay further incorporates personality Type A and Type B traits which explains how positive and negative traits translate into organizational success and goal achievement which will culminate into successful job performance which is the product of two variables of personality traits and individual professional career. The essay is concluded on the note that the three variables namely: personality traits, employee performance and individual professional career are interrelated, a flow chart to this effect has been annexed in the study. Personality constitutes the qualities and traits which describes an individual’s character, behavioral pattern in a notable way so that changes are unusual, these qualities usually maybe positive in one set of circumstance while it may be negative in yet another situation. These qualities maybe psychological and determined by gene pattern or may be developed in due course of an individual’s life from childhood to adulthood depending upon the various environmental, cultural and social factors etc(cited in Buchanan and Huczynski, 2010, p.169).
