On page 237 paragraph three “Had you gone for a Sunday afternoon ride that day you might have seen him, close to naked, standing on the shoulders of Route 424, waiting for a change to cross.” This kind of reminds me of passing of time because he is waiting. Also another example is when in the beginning it’s a hot summer day and towards the middle there is leaves on the ground. Also page 237
We know that the story is being told through first person narrative from the second line ‘in my path’. The narrator presents his view on the subject of his decreased popularity in such a strong way, that the audience don’t question his reliability at first. Although there seems to be another voice in stanza two, it is actually the narrator’s interpretation of what happened so this may be unreliable. The poem is written in retrospect, and shows the narrator looking back over his life and how it used to be compared to now. The narrator seems amazed ‘a year ago on this very day’ at how quickly people’s opinions can change towards someone.
The narrator explains in the first line that he “may cease to be” and rushes to include he is afraid to die “before [his] pen has glean’d [his] teeming brain”. It almost seems as though Keats was unable to fit his ideas neatly into spaced lines, with punctuation marks because he is afraid to lose valuable time while he is still living. In Longfellow’s poem, however, pauses, punctuation and composition of multiple sentences produce a relaxed tone and overall feel of the poem. The poem is filled with caesuras that decrease the entire speed of the poem. “Half of my life is gone,” the comma allows for a pause and a deep breath to continue on to say “and I have let the years slip from me”.
The fact Gatsby does not turn his lights on and does not have a party shows that something is really wrong. In The Great Gatsby, light is used to set the mood, Tom thinks, “For a moment the last sunshine fell with romantic affection upon her glowing face; her voice compelled me forward breathlessly as I listened- then the glow faded, each light deserting her with lingering regret, like children leaving a pleasant street at dusk.” (Fitzgerald 14) “The novels elaborate use of light and dark imagery symbolizes emotional states.” Lighting plays a huge roll in The Great Gatsby, it sets the tone and mood for the
Katrina discusses the lack of control that we have in life and that death is simply another part of life that we must accept. Enter Without So Much As Knocking talks about how we take life for granted and we waste the time we have. All of the poems hold aspects of Futility, Life, Pain, Purpose, Anger and Disapproval these are the most likely things to make people rethink their position and how they behave towards others. The use of imagery both visual and aural is a powerful tool used masterfully by Dawe to get his messages across. Normally someone’s homecoming is cause for a celebration, but in Dawe’s poem, Homecoming Dawe uses this in an ironic sense.
In the novel Triage written by Scott Anderson, both Ahmet Talzani and Joaquin Morales seem to embody a fatalistic view of life, one in which reasons have to be created. Triage is ultimately a novel where there is a lack of hope. After Marks incident in Kurdistan we are instantly made to feel like the worst is yet to come with the use of strong and colourful language. Hope is distinguished when the whereabouts of Colin is unknown, and throughout Marks recovery there are constantly reminders that Mark will most likely never recover. Anderson shows that war has a damning effect on war journalists as well as soldiers, and that their loved ones and families are also heavily affected.
The first technique that I will be discussing is rhetorical question. A rhetorical question is a question asked for effect that neither expects nor requires an answer in the poem Exposure there two rhetorical questions and they both go back to Owens hatred of war the first quote is “what are we doing here?” even though the soldiers know they are here to fight for the war they have started to question it due to the fact that they are now facing a new war on which they dislike very much, this new war is the war against the weather the other rhetorical question is “is it that we are dying? ” during the war the soldiers wanted out of the war so badly the wanted to die. The hatred they felt for he war was flowing through there veins “but nothing happened” they were freezing cold and getting shot at by the enemy who would not want out of that? The next technique that I will be showing is repetition.
In the last two stanzas things take a turn for the worst. Daisy no longer has interest in Gatsby because he has become unsafe and demanding. The theme of my poem is love, focusing on Daisy and Gatsby. Love can be described as a strong feeling of affection and concern toward another person, but that’s not the case in the Great Gatsby. Relationships in Great Gatsby are not “loving”and tend to be more motivated by money than true love.
The modernists are 20th century writers that rejected traditional; themes and form. The modernists were interest in the inner working of human mind and a person who is flaw or alienated. c. During the 20thcentury, World War 1 affected many people and making them feel alienated. After World War 1, the Great Depression destroyed many people future. This cause modernist writer to reject traditional themes while accepting the sense of disillusionment and loss of faith.
People started to become unsatisfied with the war. Due to the cost of the war may the inflation worse (Ryan, 2008). The president kept telling the US that the war was going to end soon. Unfortunately, President Johnson lied. There was no longer any faith in government officials.
