How do the Dramatic Devices in Miller’s Play ‘The Crucible’ ensure that it is relevant to more than one Time in History? ‘The Crucible’ was published in 1952 and was based on the Salem witchcraft trials that occurred in 1962. There is however also a clear parallel to the 1950’s trials during McCarthyism where anyone with left wing views was persecuted. Throughout the play Miller uses different dramatic devices to create tension and other effects for the audience. The use of dramatic devices by Miller allows the audience to interpret aspects of the play in a way that makes it relevant to different periods in time. For example, by using dramatic devices, Miller explores the theme of fear, which is a universal emotion that is always present in society and relevant to many times in history. The Salem trials, which occur in the play, were not only relevant to the McCarthy period, but parallels can also be made to any period of time including the present, modern time. The persecution that occurs in the trial is accepted by the villagers as they believed it to be righteous and carrying out the will of God. However animosities within the society caused abuse of this hysteria and this was used to carry out revenge against personal hatred. The obvious example of this is the character Abigail, who is the main source of the hysteria. She wishes to get revenge on Elizabeth Proctor, who she describes as a ‘bitter woman, a lying, cold, snivelling, woman’. The use of commas and repeated use of negative adjectives emphasises Abigail’s hatred towards Elizabeth because Elizabeth fired her when she found out that Abigail was having an affair with her husband. In this case Abigail used the witchcraft hysteria to cause Elizabeth to be sent to jail. Parallels can be made to any period in time where people abused their power or influence to wrongly persecute innocent people
