Marcus Aurelius once said, “Whosoever does wrong, wrongs himself…” Othello by William Shakespeare and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams both illustrate the critical lens. Both authors use literary devices to convey the critical lens. Both authors use characterization and theme of deception in their literary works. The critical lens means that if a person does wrong or bad thing it will eventually affect them at the end. The quotation is true because when someone does wrong thing it comes back to them.
Othello then sees and claims Iago to be ‘honest’ throughout the play and believing all the lies that is told to him. This shows that Othello was not responsible for the bulk of the tragedy but being very gullible and not thinking twice for his actions towards his surroundings and helping Iago’s plan for revenge. Quoted by Iago in Act 3 Scene 3, “Men should be what they seem”, gives the irony of illusion and reality. There is an extensive jealousy with Othello and thinking Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio using the napkin Othello gave to Desdemona as the symbol between them, building a chaotic wrath inside
/ It is not for your health, thus to commit / your weak condition to the raw cold morning.” (II, i; 234-236) Brutus is a loving character through this quote because normally in that time, women weren’t as well recognized as now but Brutus really cares ad loves his wife. Another one of Brutus’s characteristics/actions that make him as the hero of the play is that when he initially he wants to join the conspiracy, he has a different reason to kill Caesar. He doesn’t do it for greed and envy but it’s rather explained in the following quote: “Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more” (III.ii:21-22). Even though Brutus makes wrong decisions, he didn’t want to kill people as much as a person like Cassius wants to. Also, Brutus is
Romeo and Juliet By: Steff Commentary This section may appear to readers as unimportant because it is just Capulet and Tybalt talking and nothing happens. On the contrary, this passage illustrates how the characters handle situations given. This may foreshadow problems for each character such as maybe future aggressive conflict with Tybalt. The character Capulet is all a façade. He appears warm hearted and eager to end the conflict at first but then you see his real intentions and his real state of mind is focused on “what the people want” and not what is best for Romeo under the given circumstances of the families’ feud.
Optical illusion and misconception are tools that are used to mask the truth and enhance a story. In “The Ways We Lie”, by Stephanie Ericsson, she touches on how individuals in society often fabricate the truth in order to achieve a good sense of life. In Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, fabricating the truth plays a prominent role in this drama and is continuously shown through the actions of Guildenstern, Claudius and Hamlet. These characters use dishonesty not only to create suspense in the play but also to create suspense in their every day lives. Guildenstern’s sympathetic needs are often confused with his sense of anger and wickedness.
This can be shown in the ‘Proof of Marriage’ source as the phratry must accept that a child is legitimate, otherwise property will not be given to the son. However it can also be said that it is in fact wives who fear their husbands and not the other way round. In the Eurastophenes’ murder case, Euphilites laughed at his wife when she suggested he ‘mauled the maid which could indicate women were in fear of how sexually controlling their husbands could be and how they could still get away with it. In the Naerea source is also shows men can be abusive to women with little to no consequence as Phrynion gets away with his abuse towards Naerea. You could also view the violence as a cry of fear and other controlling behaviour could emphasise that.
In times of kings and queens people would speak of leaders to prideful that they can not see past the truth they do not realize their own corruption. Pride can be many people’s downfall, and it also can be peoples push to the top. Like Oedipus, he showed so much hubris that eventually leads him to his fall. Being prideful was considered a bad thing that showed weakness and over-confidence. Now the meaning of the word twisted, pride is now good trait having pride means one is confident in what they have done and are proud of it.
Rider Hoffman Feb.25.2012 Period 4 Romeo and Juliet Essay Although people may think that it’s their life and they can do what they want with it, their actions and choices really do affect other people. Shakespeare, throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet, repeatedly uses Romeo as the perfect example of this. Romeo’s impulsiveness negatively affects his friends and mentor, the Capulet and Montague families, and even his lover, Juliet. Romeo’s choices didn’t only affect him. Romeo’s choices cause pain and stress upon his friends and mentor.
“Friar Lawrence, less ambitious and more desperate than his fellow manipulators, does not hope that Juliet’s death will dissolve the families’ hatreds but only that it will give Romeo and chance to come and carry her off” (Snyder). At this point Romeo and Juliet’s relationship could not solve the problems between the families and the Friar was only uniting them. This is what made the Friar so repulsive. Even now after deaths and family issues, He treated the situation like a game. “Hold, daughter, I do spy a kind of hope, / Which craves as desperate an execution / As that is desperate which we would prevent (4.1.69-71).
