Extracurricular activities are activities performed by students that fall outside the area of the normal curriculum of school. What are some remarkable benefits of these activities? How do extracurricular activities affect children? The purpose of this essay is to discuss some positive effects of extra-curricular activities on child development; the three most important of which are influences on physical development, mental state and social skills. First, extra–curricular activities offer some significant benefits to children on physical development. Outdoor activities bring a good time of physical exercises for kids to keep fit. In particular, some sports such as swimming, gymnastics develop the body’s strength and ability to move and bend easily, while other sports like basketball, volleyball help increase the height of children. In addition, extra–curricular activities make children stay healthy. At Edward R. Murrow High school in Brooklyn, New York, extra–curricular activities often take place in countryside with lots of fresh air and sunshine which is very helpful for their health. Finally, extra–curricular activities lessen children‘s bad habits such as watching television or playing computer games too much. According to Colorado State University Extension, taking extra–curricular activities between 2 and 6 p.m. keeps children busy and gets them away from televisions and computers. Therefore, extra–curricular activities are very beneficial to children’s health. Second, taking extra-curricular activities helps children develop better mental state. This can be explained by the effect of making children relax of extra-curricular activities. When participating in extra-curricular activities, a child is able to give his or her brain a rest from studying and doing homework.
