Sociology 210 Midterm Paper: Question 2 Auguste Comte is credited with being the founder of sociology due to the fact that he gave the discipline its name. Yet, most of the new ideas and thoughts that are emerging are often improvements or extensions of previous scholars and thinkers. This is the certainly the case with Comte, for he was working within a long French tradition of thinking that gave him the vital elements that allowed for his announcement that the era of sociology was upon them (Beeghley, Powers and Turner.2012). Comte was born in 1789 in Montpellier, France. He was born into and lived during the maelstrom of post-revolutionary France. At his birth, the Directory ruled France after the Reign of Terror imposed my Robespierre, but after many years and after multiple leaders and leaderships, Napoleon II was established as emperor. During this time France was undergoing a major political change accompanied by industrialization. Industrialization brought new classes of individuals, including urban wage earners and expanded numbers of bourgeoisie, as well as multiple structural changes such as the factory, bureaucracy, and open markets. During these changes, Comte’s career began, enjoyed a promising beginning, and then faded to embarrassment and ridicule (Beeghley, Powers and Turner p 20) Auguste Comte began and finished his series of Course of Positive Philosophy (1830-1842). With six volumes, the first three volumes concentrated on the physical sciences that have already been established. For example; math, physics, biology and chemistry. The final 3 volumes dealt with the inevitable coming of social science (Standford). The Course of Positive Philosophy is Comte most famous and notable piece of work.
