1b)Coal is a fossil fuel, which means when it is burnt it releases unwanted pollutants which have a negative and harmful impact on our environment. These pollutants are: Carbon Dioxide- This gas is considered to be the most harmful pollutant as it contributes to global warming. Coal is attributed to approximately 20% of the total pollution globally per year of all the fossil fuels. Sulfur emissions- when sulfur mixes with oxygen a harmful substance is formed. SO2, sulfur dioxide effects our trees and water systems and is the prominent cause of acid rain.
This coupled with an increase in living for the majority of the world, especially RICs such as India where its oil consumption had increased by 40 million tonnes over a 6 year period, makes supplying the world’s energy demands a very difficult task. The main source of energy for the majority of the world comes from fossil fuels; however this reliance is a large cause for concern as these are finite and cause great environmental damage. It is believed that we have reached peak oil production, meaning that we are producing more than we ever have or ever will in the future. It is thought that at current levels of consumption we only have 40 years of oil supplies remaining. One resource that is at high risk of being contaminated due to fracking is water. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that up to 140 billion gallons of water are used for 35,000 wells each year. Fracking procedures are even excluded from the safe drinking water act of underground injection controls and regulations except when diesel fuel is being used. That means these companies that perform fracking procedures avoid using diesel so that we have no idea what they’re putting in to the ground. Even some states allow fracking to be exempt from state water use regulation, an agreement limiting large water withdrawals; despite the fact that each fracking well uses up to five million gallons of locally sourced water.

Those that debate a change is needed say that Coal, oil and natural gas is polluting our atmosphere, the air that is breathed and killing wildlife. People will soon run out of these three sources and there should be a backup plan put into action before it is too late. I personally can see both sides; however, I want to see the United States use wind, solar or water for their energy sources. The United States is broke, and we owe so much money to other countries as it is.
Because of these economics times that the world is currently in, the company found its business in disarray subsequently an action plan was put in place for the company could be saved. As of January 16th 2009 a week after the motions were initiated in court, Circuit City decided to close all 567 remaining stores in the United States. Those are two of the main questions that have come to mind about the way to focus our thoughts on what can be done to decrease this issue in the world today. One of the major atmospheric issues that has been destroying the environment for years is global warming. I have read that in the present compared to the past global warming has increased tremendously.
Drilling for Oil in the Arctic Refuge The continued decrease in fossil fuels in the world today has caused some major concern. With the decrease in fossil fuel, we see the price of gas rise everyday with concern on how long we will be able to continue to rely on fossil fuels. With the United States relying heavily on foreign imports for oil, it has caused for the need to find a supply within the country. With so much reliance on foreign oil has caused all fingers to point at the oil reserve found to be below the National Wildlife Refuge, which is protected by the government. The argument over the oil refuge has raised a major reaction by many environmental groups to not allow the refuge to be us for the benefit of people or the United States.
