Balinese is a type of dance that is a colorful and very technical dance. It originates from Bali and is very traditional. It is taught when the child is young the child has to learn every move the teacher teaches them. This type of dance has always fascinated me. My friend whom goes to school with me performs Balinese and I have watched her before. The first time I saw her I was amazed at the precision and how elegant she looked. Balinese is a type of dance that I have never practiced and since I watched my friend I wanted to study it. This is why I choose this type of dance has my unfamiliar dance. My familiar dance is very different then Balinese. My familiar dance is the traditional Highland Dance from Scotland. I have studied and trained in Highland Dance for three years now. Highland is a high impact dance that takes lots of energy and precision. The traditional Highland Dances represent war and fighting. Both dances are filled with tradition and culture, which are the two important aspects of both dances. Scottish Highland dancing is one of the oldest forms of folk dance, dating back to the 11th or 12th century. Highland was created when the Auld Alliance occurred between Scotland and France. Because of the complications between the two counties the old Kings and chiefs of Scotland created the Highland Games. They used the Highland Games as a way of choosing the best men for their military. Only men were allowed to participate in the Highland Games. Highland dancing was one of the various ways men were tested for strength, stamina, accuracy, and agility. The Highland dances also required both athletic and artistic skill.
