Reflection on Additional Placement Day – Local Hospice.

For this piece of reflective writing I will be using Gibbs (1988) model of reflection to help guide me through this reflective process.
At a clinical forum meeting I attended two members of Pendleside Hospice gave a talk on that the Hospice has to offer and how they would like to do more to support the Integrated Community Nursing teams role. As I am new to my placement area I felt it would be extremely beneficial to have detailed knowledge of what services are provided and how I may be able to utilise them in my new role.
Prior to the placement day I was really looking forward to attending as I felt this was a great opportunity to develop my knowledge of local services but also to gain an in-depth understanding of the Hospice in general.
The Hospices philosophy of care believes that hospice care for the people of Burnley and Pendle should extend far beyond the hospice building. Their aim and purpose is to promote the quality of life for each individual and his or her family and carers. They do this by delivering specialist care appropriate to each patient’s needs and family circumstances. This encompasses a whole range of physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs.
The hospice offers short term in-patient stays for symptom control, rehabilitation and respite care for patients who are eighteen years of age or over with cancer or other life-limiting illnesses. If a patient’s condition is stable but such that they cannot return home, alternative arrangements will be made for their on-going care. However, if they have reached the final stage of their illness, they may choose to stay in the hospice for care and support. Patients are admitted under the care of the hospice Medical Director.
