Honor to Beowulf Honor and bravery are qualities that most would consider noble traits of any man and over time, though the concept of honor may have changed, Beowulf’s personality still presents clear characteristics of this honor after the countless battles and extraordinary leadership he exemplifies. Regardless of the era or age Beowulf is still seen as a virtuous man in his efforts when viewed today. When the poet of Beowulf expressed his efforts in trying to defend his country, he not only gave him qualities of an honorable person but an honorable leader and warrior as well. Beowulf, being the very generous man that he was, heard of Grendle’s terror that had swept over Denmark and quickly went to the aid of the king and offered him any help that he needed. “Beowulf, Hilgiac’s follower and the strongest of all the Geats… heard how Grendle filled their nights with horror and quickly commanded a boat fitted out proclaiming he’d go to that famous king”(Beowulf 109-114) Hrothgar was enlightened that Beowulf wanted to assist him because for so long the people of Denmark were terrified of Grendle but no one was brave nor strong enough to stop him. Beowulf went to Denmark to help the Danish people just out of benevolence. “You have come to us in friendship “(Beowulf 191). He knew that he was strong and knew that with his aid he could soon bring Denmark peace and tranquility after the horror that Grendle has brought to their country. Beowulf lived by honor and glory and sought them in everything he did. The greatest honor to him was to die in a valiant battle.”No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster. No one could try .And this dragons treasure, his gold and everything hidden in that tower will be mine or war will sweep me to a bitter death” (Beowulf 627-632).
