Pausanias, who delivers Symposium’s second speech, explains some of the societal norms governing male homoerotic affairs. The rules by which an older man and his boyfriend ( usually a young man who has probably not yet grown his beard) may behave are rigid and strongly enforced by society’s moral code. Pausanias reveals that the nature of this relationship is pursuer/pursued: “And as for attempts at conquest, our custom is to praise lovers for totally extraordinary acts” (182e Symposium). Pausanias emphasizes the morality further when he discusses the circumstances under which it is acceptable to gratify a lover. It is acceptable when “...and when the lover is able to help the young man become wiser and better, and the young man is eager to be taught and improved by his lover-then, and only
A man could be a guy who like to dress and into fashion, but that is what people today call that metro-sexual. In conclusion, the gay female and the gay male is a part of life. Most people need to realize that the way a male or female was born could not be changed. Hate crimes like those that happened to Alexander Gray and Willie Houston are tragic. Crimes like these should have been talk about nationally.
Homosexual Males in Low Socioeconomic Status Annie Williams Diversity and Oppression in the Social Work Context (SWG 533) October 12, 2012 Introduction Society chooses to see homosexual males as femenine, which is the predominant portrayal from the dominant culture. Due to this stereotype, it might be difficult for them to obtain certain jobs. Homosexual males are thought to be delicate and artistic. It is a common misconception that the majority of jobs that are held by homosexual males are in design or domestic in nature. This is how society and the media choose to view the homosexual community.
For example, a male wanting to dress and act like a female but at the same time having a sexual relationship with a male. It is true that individuals do become homosexual or anything along those lines due to hate, anger, and violence but also because of natural causes like something happening in the womb during development or the child having a sibling that is the opposite sex than them and they pick up their type of behavior whether it is a boy or a girl. On the other hand, homosexuals are often made fun of by the heterosexuals. An explanation for heterosexuals’ behavior towards homosexuals is mainly because it is out of the norm and for people who are strongly religious; the bible doesn’t state anything along the lines of being homosexual. Males typically have more of a hard time with society when they are homosexual than females.
(Rathus, Nevid & Fichner-Rathus, 2005) Historical and scientific viewpoints are greatly significant in the way that gay persons distinguish themselves today and how the development of gay communities have grown and changed. For example, looking at the historical standpoint, many of the male Greeks seen exploring their curiosity of interacting sexually with a member of the same sex, as totally normal and natural. However, the Christian Church did not agree with this view. They viewed it as a sin and un-natural. They also believed that a gay person is committing a sin and would burn in hell for having a sexual experience with a person of the same sex.
She uses Michael Jordan as an example of his masculinity in sports and femininity in dressing style. We do not generally poke fun at Jordan because he already has gained that respect from the public. To this point, Bordo draws an implication that men are afraid to dress well because they do not want to be judged by everyone else as a metrosexual and be stereotyped as a homosexual. Most try to stay inside the norms which expectations have created for us (in a way taking out uniqueness) and dare not to venture out. Bordo and I would both agree that as long as a man is secure with his own sexuality he will not have a problem dressing the way he would like
Ehab Degachi Christopher Litman ENG 2150 December 9th, 2012 Mayberry’s article focuses around discussing the role that males play in not only the community of “Bottom” but how their actions and decision making impacts the relationship between Black males and females. She goes to decipher how white men affect the actions of black men who ultimately affect the black females in the story. The white men are seen as superior, so naturally, the black men want to be like them or at least as powerful as them while still resenting them, not worshiping. They tend to be unsuccessful and resort to black females as the solution to their problems. In the article, Mayberry writes “The bottom is not powerful enough, however, to contain the destructive
Fafafini are not only able to do more challenging household labor, but also cook better than any man or woman. In my opinion, if a man acts like a woman and has sex with man, he has already decided his sexual orientation as homosexual. Fafafini, however, do not consider themselves as homosexual, but rather a “third gender” in Samoan culture. Although I have sufficient toleration towards people choice in sexual orientation, I strongly disagree with Samoan families to nurture a young child as a fafafini. National Geography (2007) showed a disheartened scene, in which a young boy screamed to his grandfather, who is a fafafini, “I would never, never, never… I’m a boy, not a girl.
In other parts of the world sexism is more prominent because males have dominant roles over women and therefore look down upon them. Not only is there sexism, but there is ambivalent sexism which is defined as sexism directed against women based on both positive and negative attitudes (hostility and benevolence) rather than uniform dislike. To better understand ambivalent sexism I took a test that would rate my hostile and ambivalent sexism. The Ambivalent sexism inventory measure how sexist you are towards men and women. My scores from this test were quite surprising to me.
The authors viewpoint of the Puritans provides a useful account on the Puritan Culture that relates to the history of America through the barring of different personal liberties. The Puritans while banning some simple pleasure were widely open to sexual ones. They encouraged sex between married couples and through time began to grow indifferent to other sexual crimes through reason of human nature. The Puritans are still regarded as the more extremist of the settlers, but they are not nearly as dull or wrathful as some historians
