HOMEMADE ORGANIC COMPOST 1. ABSTRACT The purpose of our experiment was to make Organic Compost using household organic disposals and prove that it would make a plant grow healthier and faster than a plant supplemented with a chemical fertilizer. We used 3 small sunflower plants: one was fertilized with our Organic Compost, the second one was fertilized with NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) fertilizer and the third one was left as control. We collected our data by observation and pictures and led us to conclude that our Homemade Organic Compost was better to make a plant grow than NPK. 2. PROBLEM Plants need different elements that are presente naturally in the environment like Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus and many other elementes. To improve this growth, gardeners use fertilizers to produce larger flowers and richer vegetables and are also used for a thicker and nicer lawn. Some fertilizers are made from organic materials, while others are made from synthetic or industrial compounds. Industrial fertilizers do not always have all the elements a plant needs, they are expensive and if they are used with no guidance they could harm the soil and water sources, therefore our environment. On the other hand, Organic Fertilizers like Compost contain all the nutrients plants need and are made from kitchen wastes like: coffee grounds, fruits and vegetables scrapings, paper, leaves, after-gardening clippings or egg shells. Compost improves soil quality. If the idea of compost making is spread and practiced, most of the problems of using industrial fertilizers will decrease and we will reduce dramatically household garbage that contaminates, reconciling us with the environment. 3. HYPOTHESIS Plants fertilized with our homemade Organic Compost will grow better than plants supplemented with industrial fertilizers. 4. EXPERIMENT a)
