Holes Reflection “I believe that nothing is more important to our ability to effectively address our present than understanding the lessons learned from those who have come before us.”-Charlie Gonzales (BrainyQuote). To me, this quote means that we cannot truly live in the present unless we understand what the people who came before us have taught us. This paper is based off of the book Holes by Louis Sachar. In this book, the main character, Stanley Yelnats, is a teenager who is unlucky and gets wrongly accused of stealing a pair of a celebrity’s shoes. Because of this crime, he is sent to a camp to reform troubled teenagers. While he is there, he changes in many ways that he never would’ve thought was possible. If Stanley had never gone to Camp Green Lake, he would not have changed physically, mentally, and he would not have opened up to other people and made friends. This book shows how from tragedy, good things can happen. The first way that Stanley changed, and a good thing came from tragedy, is in the way Stanley changed physically. In the beginning of the book, "Stanley Yelnats V is a white, overweight, unpopular middle-school boy, and the main character of the novel. Although he is well loved at home, he is bullied at school, and he seems to be followed by bad luck that makes his inability to stand up for himself even worse." (“Holes”). This quote basically just describes Stanley as the typical overweight kid in school that always seems to get picked on. In the novel, Stanley is described “He was overweight and the kids at his middle school often teased him about his size.” (Holes pg. 7) He has trouble digging the holes from day one, and he quickly gets tired and sore due to his weight. Each day that passes, other kids in his tent tell him that “The third hole’s the hardest,” (Holes pg. 55) and Stanley feels worse as the days pass. However, Stanley soon
