Describe a variety of perspectives on child development, taking into account different theoretical and cultural models beginning with the Western History of Childhood.

The idea of child development allows you to understand the changes overtime made on a child’s physical, psychosocial, cognitive and moral development. However the impact on child rearing in different cultures allows you to understand the effects it leaves on the child physically and mentally. When looking back to the 17th century the importance of childhood was very little due to there being no specific stage on this within the life cycle. The purpose of this essay will allow you to understand the effects of western history within childhood, how attachment is seen to be an importance aspect within child rearing and also different cultural experiences within childhood.

Childhood through the medieval world was very ignorant; it was the nature of childhood which allowed you to distinguish a child from an adult. Between the age of 5 and 7 a child would start to become independent and able to survive without the care of their mother or nanny which allowed them to start the journey of becoming an adult. Each child would then start to get involved in conversation and also following adults in their daily routines. Medieval civilization failed to perceive a transitionary period between infancy and adulthood (Heywood, 2001). Within the west children were encouraged to support themselves from an early age which will enable them to grow up fast. It took until the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth century for childhood to actually properly be discovered and the fact that each child needs special treatment and care before they actually step into the world of adults. Within medieval art, looking back as late as the 15th and 16th century children were portrayed as immature adults who dressed like men and women of their own social class.
