Butler (Charlie) English Composition ibutler@uncc.edu Spring 2011 Hawthorn 2 Informative Report - “HBCU’s: History & Relevance in the United States” Methodology The research process for this report was not nearly as difficult as anticipated once a topic I could relate to was chosen. The most difficult part of an informative report is discovering a relevant subject that could be analyzed and discussed. It took quite some time to establish the topic of HBCUs and their history and relevance in the United States. However once it was discovered, the writing process began immediately. The main reason for choosing this topic was my reading of a BET News article recently coupled with a brief conversation with my roommates. Flabbergasted at the fact they had no idea what an HBCU was I took it upon myself to query more of my peers and document their responses. BET News also constructed an article on HBCUs and their importance as recent as last week. At that point, I had established my fourth and final report subject. I will also reference BET News’ article as one of my works cited in this report. Other references for this report will include the United Negro College Fund’s “Students Speak!” report as well as articles and editorials dating the history of these institutions and their meaning to a minority. Finally, I will reference Morehouse & Spelman College and several aspects of their curriculum as well respected HBCUs. Overture Prior to entering college in the fall of 2010, I saw the acronym HBCU as a universal acronym that everyone was familiar with. I placed it in the same category of commonality as HIV or ATM however I was slightly incorrect. Many of my peers were entirely unfamiliar with the acronym, what it stood for and the rich history it denotes that dates back to 1837. A Historically Black
