Tennis was first played thousands of years ago for entertainment during religious events. It was created by European monks. At first, the game was played with yours hands and was called paume, meaning “palm” in French. After that, a leather glove was used. Later one, a handle was added, creating the first racket. the first tennis ball was made out of wood, then they were made from leather and had cellulose material. During the 14th century, the monasteries in Europe cherished this game. The game was adopted by the royal family and began to become very popular all over Europe. In France, the players would shout “Tenez!”, a words that means “play”, to start the games. In later years, the game was brought over to other countries in the world. Although the game of tennis generally has the same rules around the world, it is called different things in different countries. For instance, in Great Britain they call it real tennis or lawn tennis. In Australia they call it royal tennis. The sport of tennis requires a court, a tennis racket, and tennis balls. The overall goal is to earn more points than your opponent to win games, sets and matches. A player can only win a set if they lead two games or more. For women, sets include the highest score out of three games. For men, sets are the highest out of five games. Tennis can be played in either singles or doubles. In singles, there’s just a server and a receiver playing. The server, the one playing first, is chosen by tossing a coin or spinning the racket. Both the server and the end are changed every other game. In doubles, the teams and players alternate serving every fourth game. Although it is common and traditional for partners to stand stand side by side, they are both allowed to stand wherever they want on their side. Scoring in tennis is not like any other sports.
