The History of Tattoos
There is an art form that many of us know about today. We see it everywhere, and on many different walks of life. Tattoos are so taboo, yet so fascinating. While tattooing is negative and unacceptable among some people in the world, I believe tattoos are away of self expression. When it comes to getting a tattoo, or body art, the pain you endure makes the story of the tattoo more interesting. Amazingly, tattooing has survived the test of times. The history of tattooing comes with many stories throughout history.
Tattoos have come a long way in the world throughout history. They have been used for various reasons. As time changed, so did the use of tattoos. In today’s world, most people get tattoos for fun, and some get them for other purposes or beliefs. Throughout history tattooing has served many purposes. Tattooing has been around since the earliest civilizations. It's hard to say when exactly the art of tattooing started because tattoo history is not well recorded or known. The earliest evidence of tattooing was discovered in the mountains of Austria. An Iceman was found, His bones dated back to 3,300 B.C. His skin had signs of dots and small crosses on his lower spine and right knee and ankle joints. Such markings were believed to be used to alleviate joint pain and essentially therapeutic. Mummies have been recovered with body art, dating back to 3900 BC. The female Amunet, The Priestess of the God, had several patterns and designs in the form of dots and lines, on her body. Tattoos were also placed on the abdomen of a woman to help with fertility. Often, the reasons for tattooing, in this era, were to connect with the divine one, for medical or magical protection, to act as a sacrifice, and/ or to tell a story (Gilbert 14-36). (Terisa Green)
