History of Realism and Modernism Art

While being two separate artistic movements, Realism and Modernism have at times found themselves to be interchangeable, much like twins the two have deep similarities however are completely different. Both forms of art has influenced the world and through the different and unique styles the art and artist has touched everyone in the world. Though most people do not know the styles or artists who has painted many of the iconic art pieces that we see everyday; their work have been duplicated, replicated and parody for all to see. These art forms influence our culture. Realism is just what the name says “real.” The artwork that is drawn are real pictures of real things in the real world. Realism began in France in the 1850s with the first known artist as Gustave Courbet ("realism (art)", 2013, p. 1). It was Courbet painting “The Studio” that was rejected by the Exposition Universelle of 1855, that caused Courbet to rename his work under his new name which was “Realism, G. Courbet” ("realism (art)", 2013, p. 1). There are numerous genres for realism such as impressionism, Postimpressionism, Expressionism. Each genre takes something from the next but includes its on unique signatures of work to distinguish it. Leading the sub genre of impressionism is Claude Monet, his painting impression sunrise is what began the category of impressionism. Monet gained his inspiration from what he saw, his art depicts the life he lived. One of my favorite artist from the postimpressionism genre is Vincent Van Gogh, Vincent’s art includes Starry night and his most expensive piece sold today "Portrait of Doctor Gachet”. The painting sold for 82.5 million dollars. Van Gogh dealt with serious mental illness, his paintings reflected the bouts of his emotions as his pictures depicts his emotion.
