Hieronymus Bosch Hieronymus Bosch’s imagination was wild and has often confused modern art historians. His paintings have been contemplated and researched deeply since World War I. Was he a member of a religious sect of Christianity? Or was he a devout Orthodox? Questions like these have stumped scholars for several years. There is not much concrete data about the artist, but it is clear that Hieronymus Bosch was a profound colorist and technical expert. Hieronymus Bosch was a creative genius, unlike any other Renaissance artist, which is shown through his great works like, the Garden of Earthly Delights triptych, the Haywain triptych, and the Seven Deadly Sins and the Last Four Things. There is not much known about Bosch’s personal life and almost nothing of his personality. He was born around 1450, and records say that he died in 1516. The indicator of his age was a drawing done of him shortly before his death, which depicted him in his early to middle sixties. It is unknown if this is a self-portrait and is not included in the count of 25 of his known works of art. He was born in Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, which is now near the Belgium border. This quiet, attractive city is where his name originated. The area of Hertogenbosch was predominately middle class and religion was particularly flourishing, which was to Bosch’s advantage. In this area of the Netherlands, there was not a lot of focus on academia, but rather, religion. His family’s original name was van Aeken, and they were originally from the city of Aachen. He grew up with a sister and two brothers; one of which was an artist in the same area. It is believed that Bosch never left this area of the Netherland’s. There is some documentation that he went on a sojourn to Utrecht in his mid-life, but other than that, he was centralized around the area of Hertogenbosch. It is known that he married Aleyt
