Health and Safety leads to better performance individually and collectively. Introduction Occupational health and safety in the workplace is an imperative issue affecting all employees in the workforce. It falls under Employment Relations in regards to creating and maintaining a fair workplace with employee rights to safety and health. During the 12 month period June 2005 to 2006 it was highlighted that “10.8 million people who had worked…689,500 people or 6.4% experienced a work-related injury or illness” (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2010). Recent event such as deaths, election campaign in relation to workplace safety, unions and increased cost for work cover has given rise to the discussion of Occupational Health and Safety issues for now and the near future. The investigation of workplace safety is to be taken seriously as injuries or illnesses have a detrimental impact on the employee, as well as families, the business and the community. This is a critical topic to understand in Employment Relations as people will be prevented from injury, illness and death. The future of the next generation of employees in Australia will benefit from the continual revisitation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as new jobs are constantly being created with more dynamic environments and technologies. The need for employees to have a voice in the formation of safety workplace policies is critical in maintaining a fair workplace relationship between managers and workers. It will also play a vital role in increasing the job satisfaction among Australian employees and enforce the culture of equity and voice leading to efficiency.
