Com 113 Spring Semester Persuasive Speech Topic: Drunk Driving Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that there should be tougher penalties for drunk driving. Opening Statement: Picture this for a minute…It’s Saturday night, you and a good friend decide to go out on the town and blowing off some steam from a long work week. Your friend volunteers to be the designated driver for the night. You’re at your favorite club listening to some good music, talking with friends and having a few drinks. Before you know it, it’s last call for alcohol. You finish off your beverage, find your designated driver and prepare to head home. Your friend says it’s time to go and after getting to the car, you put on your seatbelt and settle in for a nice comfy nap on the way home. Everyone’s been there at one time or another right? Now image this…you are awakened from your nice comfy sleep to the sound of grinding metal. Sparks are flying everywhere, rocks are hitting you in the face and you are upside down. Once the car stops skidding, you unbuckle your seatbelt and crawling out of the car. You have no idea what’s just happened. Another motorist stops to help and tells you, “I was behind your car for a few miles, I saw the whole thing happen. Your vehicle flipped 2 times, landed on its’ top and skidded for several feet.” This scenario actually happened to me in 1996 near Boise, Idaho. What I didn’t know was the reason my friend had fallen asleep at the wheel was because he was drunk also. He’d had several shots over the course of the night and hadn’t bothered to tell me before we started our trip home. He not only put his life in danger but mine as well. No charges were filed in this incident. I. Types of Penalties and Sanctions Incurred by State Laws (Problem) A. Types of Penalties - Administrative - Criminal B. Sanctions Incurred - South Dakota -
