The intentionally unnamed narrator uses materialism to shape his identity “I had become a slave to the Ikea nesting instinct”. Through this characterisation, Fincher is making a social comment on the materialistic, “yuppie” mindset society has adopted. The tongue-in-cheek comment “I had it all. I had a decent stereo, a wardrobe that was getting very respectable. I was close to being complete” shows that the Narrator was never emotionally satisfied with basing his identity on superficial factors, constantly searching for ways to escape it like anonymous support groups comprised of unconditional inclusion “ If I didn't say anything, people always assumed the worst”.
Mainly because no one, not even Thoreau can be completely self-reliant, regardless of their desire to be so. Some people must rely on those around them; even children, the sick, and elderly. Self-reliance and solidarity are two things very important to Thoreau's numerous references to an individualistic way of living. Thoreau also expresses a strong feeling of non-conformity. “How worn and dusty, then, must be the highways of the world, how deep the ruts of tradition and conformity (Conclusion.691)!” In this quote, Thoreau states how the tradition of the world is being over-used and is outdated.
The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, depicts women as weak persons, who are expected to submit to men, and whose only access to power is through dishonest means. None of the females in The Crucible possess extreme power, but the truthful, pure-hearted, and family oriented women seem to be even less powerful than the others. Elizabeth Proctor and Rebecca Nurse are two of the less powerful women in The Crucible. Both of their lives are led by an instinct to serve their families and communities . Elizabeth Proctor is convicted in participating in witchcraft even when it seems obvious to her loved ones and most others around her that she had never involved herself with demonic forces .
In the beginning of the book, Lucinda was mean and stubborn. I did not like her one bit. She gave horrible gifts to all not just to Ella. For example, when a giant couple was getting married, Lucinda gave them a horrible gift. The giants could now never leave each other’s presence.
This whole relationship towards Isabelle and Azaire seems to be a relationship where Azaire has all the power to do what he likes and Isabelle is not treated as a human being and obeys Azaire. You can tell Isabelle feels she can do nothing about it and has no power of what is happening to her. She feels worthless and she has become used to feeling like that with Azaire always hurting her and she is blamed by
...But everyone I know is either shouting or dancing around like wild or beating up one another. Do you notice how people hurt each other nowadays?’ ‘You sound so very old.’ ‘Sometimes I’m ancient. I’m afraid of children my own age.’ (26-27) Because she is deemed “antisocial,” she has completely given up on making friends at school. She accepts the fact that she does not like what the rest of society does and sees it as a good thing. Her level of maturity is far greater than any kid, and even adult.
Were they trapped within their homes as if they were prisons? By asking herself these questions we see how great the effect of her being treated like a child was to her. She had to ability to think or do for herself, all she was allowed to do was sit there, her body was well but her mind and soul were dying. In the story, The Yellow Wallpaper, evidence of the subordination of women to a childlike state is clear in the lack of power, control over her own mind and body, and he inability to make her on decisions and be heard. The lack of choice in her treatment is what made is lose mental stability and caused her go crazy.
Militarism led to problems because every country had confidence that its new technological weaponry and troop count could defeat any other country, which led to a severe lack of negotiations. And the only way to find out whose military is better, is to fight. Another key factor that played a role in World War I was alliances. Alliances caused them to be more “cocky” towards each other because they knew if they went to war they had someone behind there back. This can be compared to as a domino effect.
Mary, Colin and Archibald Craven are examples of this. Mary didn’t care for anything, she was so spoilt that nothing and no one meant anything to he; she was so used to everybody hating her. Colin is also spoilt and filled with ideas that he’s going to die. Archibald is the coward that can’t face reality or the hope for a better tomorrow. The one thing they all have in common is negatively, you get the sense that they would rather be dead and in reality it’s like they are because they don’t care about anything.
The worst thing that can ever happen to a person on the job was not knowing what the heck she was doing and no one was willing to aid her. Apparently they forgot they haven’t trained me and since it’s the grand opening things were pretty busy. I got through the day with common sense, I might have made a mistake here and there and everywhere else, ok basically I made a lot of mistakes! And that wasn’t the worst of worst thing that can happen, the straw that finally broke this camel back was I work with people that don’t know one word of English, ok, maybe I exaggerated, they do know something, they know what no mean!
