Why is tobacco consumption harmful for society and how should the youth step forward to eradicate this destructive habit? Some wise man once said-“A cigarette is a pipe with a fire at one end and a fool at the other.” Smoking of tobacco is one of the major problems of the society, popular among the youths and the old alike. According to an estimation by WHO, there are 1.1 billion smokers worldwide. Tobacco consumption is not only harmful for the individual who consumes it but also affects the society either directly or indirectly. Lets us first be acquainted with the harmful effects of tobacco consumption on an individual. Tobacco consumption not only affects the health of an individual but it also affects his mental, social as well as financial conditions. Smoking accounts to almost 80-90% of all chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. Smoking can cause lung disease, cancer, heart disease, Emphysema, complicated pregnancy (in case of a woman), breathing problem, etc. Smoking also leads to stinking mouth and pale teeth which are major turn offs. A regular smoker finds it difficult to keep up with the pace of their friends while playing outdoor games or while engaging themselves in any other outdoor activities as their stamina is reduced. The smokers who smoke not only affect themselves but also the ones around themselves. Passive smoking is a major problem in the society. Passive smoking is as harmful as active smoking. The habit tobacco smoking is not pocket friendly as well. Generally, all these products are expensive. One, who becomes addicted, needs to buy it regularly and as a result they had to spend a lot of money. Tobacco consumption affects the society in many ways. “STATUTORY WARNING: Smoking tobacco is injurious for health”- is a common warning that everyone can see on every single packet of cigarette, but people tend to neglect this.
