Plot Snake: 1. Initiation- The first time that Hamlet’s world becomes disrupted is when his father, King Hamlet of Denmark, dies of a “serpent bite.” His mother, Gertrude, instantly marries his uncle, Claudius, who had become the king. Hamlet is very troubled by this. 2. Burnt Fingers- When King Hamlet’s ghost appears to Hamlet, the plot twists. Hamlet is told that his uncle, Claudius, actually killed his father with poison. His father’s ghost also tells him to seek revenge on Claudius. 3. Temporary Binding- Hamlet pretends to become crazy. He tries to talk to his mother about her decisions following her husband’s death and how Hamlet is “bothered” by them. 4. Infernal Vision- Hamlet kills Polonius unknowingly by pushing his sword through a curtain that Polonius was eavesdropping behind. This led to Ophelia’s insanity and eventual drowning. Hamlet has intercepted a note to London brought by Rosencrantz and Guildenstern requiring Hamlet’s execution upon his arrival in London. Hamlet replaced the note with one requiring Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’s execution upon their arrival in London which is followed through. 5. Final Binding- Laertes goes to Hamlet with a poisoned sword seeking revenge. Hamlet reverses the score by using Laertes’ own sword on Laertes killing him. Gertrude drinks from a poisoned cup intended for Hamlet from Claudius and dies. Hamlet poisons Claudius which kills him. And finally, Hamlet dies from a slight cut from Laertes’ poisoned sword. 6. Termination- Fortinbras arrives in Denmark to a broken society which makes it easy for him to take the land. Fortinbras has gotten revenge for his father without having to actually kill anyone
