In America, the most common and traditional activity in Halloween is Trick'O'Treating. The history of “Trick’O'Treating” can be traced back to the early celebrations of All Soul’s Day. On those days, all the poor people would go out at night to people's homes begging and the housewives would give them special treats called “soulcakes”. Trick or treating has been around less than a hundred years. After that, times changed and the children became the beggars. They dressed up in spooky costumes, knock door to door an shouted " Trick or treat, Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat !" for treats such as apples, buns, and candies. The original idea was that if you did not give a "treat" to the trick or treaters they would then play a "trick" on you. Now, when the custom came to America, the children would be given candy to prevent the people from being tricked. It was tradition that if a person did not give the child candy, the child would play a trick on them, such as egging their house. Carving the pumpkin is also a popular activity. The activity originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed "Stingy Jack." who invited the Devil to have a drink with him and then didn't want to pay for his drink. It's a long story, but the bottom line is that Jack tricked the Devil into climbing up a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While the devil was up in the tree, Jack carved a sign of the cross into the tree's bark so that the he could not come down until he promised not to bother Jack for ten more years. Soon thereafter, Jack died and God would not allow such an unsavory figure into heaven. The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell.
