Mitch Albom, author of Don’t Shoot Holes in Gun Control Bills and Thomas Sowell, author of Mass Shootings and Mass Hysteria are two well-known columnists who both have strong opinions about gun control. Mitch Albom makes it clear by using multiple distressing examples that he is all in favor for gun control. On the contrary, Thomas Sowell makes a compelling argument to why he believes gun control will not reduce violence. However, I believe that Albom makes an even more cogent argument. In my opinion, Mitch Albom’s argument that gun control is necessary was the most effective. In his essay, the short stories about the man gunned down on the freeway, the firefighter being shot while putting out a blaze, and the sixteen year old shot while sleeping really grab the attention of the reader. Albom uses pathos to emotionally appeal the reader. In my case, when I was reading the essay the example stories made me very emotional. While reading the examples, I could not help but to put myself in the shoes of the victim’s family. This was one reason that led me to believe that gun control bills should indeed be put into effect. During Don’t Shoot Holes in Gun Control Bills, Mitch Albom tells a personal story. One day he went to the dry cleaners to pick up a jacket. When he walked in, he realized he was the only one in the store besides a customer at the counter. When he questioned the customer if anyone was working, he turned around and pointed a gun in Albom’s face. Albom was commanded to get in the closet or he would be killed. While reading this part of the essay, I had placed myself in the author’s shoes. I then understood why Albom feels so strongly about gun control bills. And I indeed would feel the same way if I were put in the situation that he was at the dry cleaners that day. Mitch Albom also made a good point when he mentioned that we need to stop allowing guns
