POSITION STATEMENT 5 My Position on Guiding and Supporting Young Children I chose the following articles for my position on guiding and supporting young children, “Better Teachers, Better Preschools: Student Achievement Linked to Teacher Qualifications”, “Twelve Characteristics of Effective Early Childhood Teachers”, and “Learning and Teaching in Preschool“. In the article “Better Teachers, Better Preschools: Student Achievement Linked to Teacher Qualifications” is about the correlation between the education of teachers of young children and the quality of education they can provide to their students. I chose this article because as an early childhood student I believe that we as teachers should be educated before teaching children in our care. Without much needed preparation and education teachers limit their educational effectiveness. I agree that more state policies are needed to ensure our teachers are maximizing their effectiveness in the classroom. However for the long term educational, social and economic benefits of this to occur teachers must not only be well educated but also adequately compensated. Not only do preschool teachers with a college degree appear to be more effective but they tend to have larger vocabularies to which they expose their students, they create better lesson plans for the class, and they are better problem solvers.
